Offseason Review and Preseason Preview Week 1

What can I say that has not already been said about the moves that the Philadelphia Eagles have made over the last few weeks? I've heard talks of "Dream Team" and it seems like everyone is crowning this team Super Bowl champs before a game has been played. This all sounds great, but it is a bit premature. Don't get me wrong, as an Eagles fan, I am more excited about this season than any since 2004 but this is the NFL and anything can happen. I feel like I must mention the high profile stuff like the signing of Nnamdi Asomugha and Jason Babin, as well as Cullen Jenkins and the trade for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, but for me the depth related signings of players like Ronnie Brown, Ryan Harris, and Donald Lee are just as, if not moreso, important. Brown gives this Eagles team something it has lacked for a while now, a big back who can run between the tackles in short yardage and goalline situations. Harris is a smaller, yet much more athletic, tackle who can effectively split time with Winston Justice and may even start over him. Lee is a solid veteran who can take some pressure off of Brent Celek. This team also had a great draft picking up several players who can contribute as well as the kicker of the future. Casey Matthews may win a starting LB job in camp, Danny Watkins will be a great interior lineman in this league, and the brass in Philly is so high on Alex Henery that they dont have another kicker in camp. Jaiquawn Jarrett and Curtis Marsh will provide depth to an already good secondary.

This was a good offseason for the Eagles, but there were some issues that were left un-addressed. This team needs a big redzone target at WR. DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are fantastic talents but they just don't have the size to go over the midddle or catch the jump ball in the endzone.  On defense, the linebacking corps is young and unproven. Despite his history with injuries, I think this team needed Stewart Bradley's pressence at LB. At the end of the day, though, this was a very effective offseason and Eagles fans are very excited looking forward.

Lets take some time now to look forward. Thursday night The Eagles will kick off the preseason at Lincoln Financial Field against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens made some changes this offseason, saying goodbye to veterans like Derrick Mason, Willis McGahee, and Todd Heap as well as RB Le'Ron McClain. They brought in Ricky Williams to share the load with Ray Rice. This team seems weak at the WR position and that should bode well for the good secondary fo Philadelphia. The Ravens once dominant defense is now aging and their window for a super bowl run may be closing. That said, this is still one of the better teams in the NFL. I expect this to be a good matchup, but this is preseason week 1. All I really want to see is the newly acquired talent to mesh and some of this young talent to perform well on the field.

Its about to get started and I am sure you are all as excited as I am. Go Eagles!!!!
